Party City - Indigenous Costumes?

Why Party City Should Not Have Produced These Indigenous Costumes In The First Place

Halloween is right around the corner and many people are buying their costumes from stores, one so famously known, Party City. Party City has a relatively good reputation when it comes to customer satisfaction. They've always been there for us when it comes to quality costumes for an enjoyable halloween. Their variety has never failed our costume needs especially on the month of Halloween. But the promotion of indigenous costumes have gone too far which people believe is inappropriate.

Yes, Party City is trying to give us as much variety in costume as possible, and is simply being a business. But the reason why people think this costume is so racist is because Indigenous people should not be classified as a 'costume' in the first place.  It wouldn't be very pleasing for someone to say "I'm dressing up as a indigenous person for halloween" because it could go wrong in many ways.

To conclude, Yes, the costumes they produced shouldn't have happened in the first place. It was definitely a racist move to make and if parents are smart enough, they won't let their children dress up as a 'Dream Catcher Cutie' for Halloween. But now how should you feel about this? The choice is yours. You can either stop buying from Party City to show them economic downfall so that they can avoid making those kind of mistakes again, or you can forgive them for being a business and being human. Party City has almost never let us down with customer satisfaction, at least from my experience. Just hoping that Party City will stop making racist costumes is probably gonna happen. Party City is likely to fix these mistake because their a business. So I will continue with life with this kind of mindset, but if they don't fix their mistakes, it is only right to try and stop them from making these racist costumes again.

  1. You're pretty much right about what you have just said. I mean wearing an indigenous costume could go wrong in many ways and it's up to us whether we should make a big deal about it or let it slide. I mean sure, we can be like that lady that was unhappy with what she saw, report it to the Party City manager, and file it as a complaint. Additionally, I mentioned in my blog that if people keep getting butthurt over racist and offensive costumes, then might as well pull them off shelves so that there will be no complaints from anyone. In conclusion, we should just let racist costumes slide and not think about them too much.

  2. I believe that even though people should be aware of a situation like this, it is just a costume made by Party City, it's them being a business and is a costume made for a one day event, but the choice is up to you whether you choose to not care or take action. With that statement, I agree with you 100%!
